The Pendleton Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade project continues to make progress, with approximately 71% of the work completed to date. Several major system start-ups are scheduled for this month, including:
· Digester No. 2 following completion of diffuser upgrades
· New influent pump stations featuring coarse screening and five new pumps
· New headworks facility with fine screens and grit removal chambers
· Seeding and integration of the new Activated Granular Sludge (AGS) system, which will completely transition the plant’s existing treatment process
The $65 million upgrade project, which began in September 2024, will expand the plant’s treatment capacity from 2 MGD to 5 MGD. Improvements include construction of a new influent pump station, new headworks and screening facilities, expansion and upgrades to the tertiary filter and UV disinfection systems, an additional digester, and a new electrical building.
A key component of the project is the installation of a new Activated Granular Sludge (AGS) system, which will be the second largest AGS system in the nation and the first of its kind in South Carolina. Construction is expected to be completed in December.
The Pendleton Wastewater Treatment Plant serves the Town of Pendleton, the City of Clemson, and Anderson County. ClearWater Solutions has provided operations and maintenance services for the facility since April 2019. GMC is serving as the project engineer, while Harper General Contractors is the project contractor.
